Multifaceted performer Alec Mapa was first discovered starring on Broadway in David Henry Hwang’s Tony-winning drama, M. Butterfly. Touring with the production across the United States, Alec garnered brilliant notices for his work in the complex role of Song Liling, but this recognition did not translate into continued work. Chronicling his years as a struggling actor in Los Angeles into his highly acclaimed one-man hit show I Remember Mapa, the performer was awarded the LA Weekly award for Best Solo Performance and the show played to sold-out houses in Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal.
Television producers took notice and the result was numerous guest-starring appearances on more than 35 series, including such shows as Seinfeld, Roseanne, NYPD Blue and Friends. Alec went on to make television history as Vern, TV’s first gay Asian series regular on Some of My Best Friends. He next played the wisecracking receptionist Adam Benet on the hit UPN comedy Half and Half.
Alec’s motion picture appearances include roles in Falling Off the Verge, Playing by Heart, The Substance of Fire, Bright Lights, Big City, A New Life, and Home.
Alec has appeared in the Broadway productions of A Little Hotel on the Side and Timon of Athens. Off-Broadway, he received rave notices for his performances in the critically acclaimed New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater productions of A Language of Their Own and Dogeaters. Alec recently flexed his musical comedy muscles in the new Christopher Durang musical Adrift in Macao. He has won the L.A. Drama Critics Award, the L.A. Ovation Award, two Dramalogue Awards, a Garland Award from Backstage West and a special citation from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for the continuing excellence of his work. His two plays, Pointless and Drama (combined with I Remember Mapa into the work Mapa Mia) were nominated for the GLAAD Media Image Award for the season’s Best Play.
Currently, Alec is on Desperate Housewives playing Eva Longoria’s BFF Vern, and on LOGO’s comedy special, Wisecracks.
